A Brief Idea About Induction/ Standard Fans
Before we jump into a BLDC ceiling fan, let us understand how a regular fan works. All standard fans have four main components – main winding, auxiliary winding, a capacitor, and a rotor. The single-phase induction motor in the fan converts the electric energy to mechanical energy.
When the coils in the motor are supplied with energy, the capacitor creates a rotating magnetic field for the ceiling fan to operate. The created rotating field forces the rotor to move from one pole to another, thus causing the motor to rotate. The blades attached to the motor also start moving. The speed of the fan is controlled by controlling the voltage supplied.
What Is A BLDC Ceiling Fan?
For a BLDC fan (Brushless Direct Current Motor fan), there are no mechanical commutators or brushes between the rotor and the stator. The motors commutate electronically.
Since there are no mechanical commutators or brushes between the rotor and stator, no heat is generated, nor is there any chance for wear and tear. This increases the lifespan of the BLDC fan. Also, it reduces energy consumption and lowers your electricity bill.
How Does A BLDC Ceiling Fan Work?
Unlike the standard fan, the speed for a BLDC fan is controlled by switching the frequency in the BLDC motor. To understand how a BLDC ceiling fan works, we first need to understand the main components in a BLDC drive. The components include –
The SMPS in the BLDC drive converts the AC supply into DC supply. The microcontroller receives the input data from the remote control. This input is given as the output data to the inverter. It is this inverter that drives the data to the motor in the ceiling fan.
The working of the rotor and stator is a bit similar to the one in a standard fan, i.e., in both these fans, the movement happens when two similar poles meet. In a BLDC fan, the rotor is a permanent magnet, while the stator has a copper coil winding. When electric current passes through the copper coils, it produces magnetic flux.
An electronic drive constantly changes the polarity in the stator in a manner that when the rotor meets the stator, two similar poles meet, i.e., a north meets the north pole or the south meets the south pole.
When two similar poles meet continuously, there is a constant rotational movement resulting from which the motor rotates. When the motor turns, the blades of the fan also move.

Less Energy Consumption
We do not consider fans as something that consumes a lot of energy but what we fail to realize is, unlike all the other appliances, a fan operates 24/7. So, the energy consumed by a fan does matter in the long run. BLDC fan consumes less energy when compared to a standard fan. The former consumes about 30 watts while the latter consumes around 75 watts.
