Is it Possible to Trust Air Purifiers ?

There is no denying that air purifiers are in full swing.

Numerous technologies have emerged, many brands have developed their models, and there are now air purifiers in all sizes and all budgets.

But before you know how to choose the right air purifier, you have to ask yourself the question: Is it really worth cleaning your air?

And even if they are useful, the cleaners are also reliable; are they all reliable?

First of all, it is important to know that we are talking about indoor air, because, on our own, it is difficult to influence outdoor pollution.

That’s actually a good thing because inside the air is the most polluted. This is because the indoor air receives contamination from the outside air, but it accumulates and is also influenced by pollution sources within buildings.

And these are numerous: detergents, gas stoves, fireplaces, heaters, paints, moulds, mites, smoke, etc. Result: The indoor air is on average 5 times more polluted than the outside air.

An adult breathes an average of 10 kg of air per day. You read correctly, 10 kilograms.

So our body consists mainly of the air we breathe. A little pollution with each breath can have very serious or even dangerous consequences: fatigue, stress, concentration problems, sleep disturbances, irritation, respiratory diseases, the fragility of the body and in the long run even a tenfold risk of serious diseases (e..B. cancer).

That is why we are convinced that it makes sense, sometimes even indispensable, to clean the house’s air.

It is necessary to drink clean water and not eat products that are harmful to health.

The good news is that it is now easy to clean the air at home or work.

In summary, there are many technologies for air purification: either filtration techniques (HEPA filters, activated carbon filters) or techniques for physicochemical reactions with pollutants (air ionizers, cold photocatalysis filters, UV photocatalysis, plasma filters, etc.).

What is certain is that the above technologies are not all equally effective and that some of them even carry certain risks.

Therefore, we recommend that you prefer sophisticated technologies that are mastered over a long period of time.

HEPA filtration and activated carbon filtration have been known for a long time and are used in medicine .B. They are therefore absolutely safe.

A HEPA filter blocks the fine particles that pass through its mesh. It is an efficient technology capable of blocking up to 99.97% of air particles.

Only the smallest particles, in the nanometer range, are resistant to this.

Also, note that HEPA filters are ranked according to the size of the particles they can block and their efficiency. We are talking about E10, E11, H12, H13, H14, U15… Below H12 it is a cheap filter, with average efficiency.

From H13 onwards, the efficiency is considerable, but be careful, from H14 the airflow is slowed down too much, the air slips through cracks, and the efficiency decreases.

Our analysis, therefore, shows that an H13 filter is best suited for households and offices.

Activated carbon filters have a lower efficiency than HEPA filters, but they target pollutants that allow the filters to pass through: gases, volatile organic compounds, smoke, bad odours, etc.

Activated carbon filters are therefore a perfect addition to HEPA filters. But not all activated carbon filters are the same. Some have only a few grams of activated carbon.


Air purifiers with denser activated carbon filters should be preferred.

Above all, the air sometimes has to pass through the filter several times before it is cleaned. So do not take an air purifier that is too small, too slow or equipped with too little activated carbon.

Other technologies are generally less effective at cleaning the air, or they are effective, but also release residual pollutants.

For example, according to ANSES, a poor quality ionizer can release ozone in large quantities. Therefore, avoid cheap ionizers of an unknown brand.

Also avoid ionizers alone, which are too slow to clean the air. While a HEPA filter takes only a few minutes to clean a room, it takes more than a day for an ionizer to take effect.

An open door, a draught or worse, a source of pollution in the room, and all the ioniser work must start from scratch.

Again, we believe that an ionizer is a good addition to the HEPA filter if it is of good quality.

In fact, it will bring its positive touch without relying only on it purifying the room. Above all, it will bring a beneficial and invigorating effect, the so-called negative ions.


Conclusion: Can air purifiers be trusted?

Usually yes, but prefer simple technologies such as HEPA, activated carbon or even an additional ionizer. Choose brands that communicate about their quality.

Check the CADR value of an air purifier to see if it is the correct size for you. Don’t always believe the size of the manufacturers, especially if they don’t disclose CADR information.
