You’ve already opened your salad pocket a few days later, and in it, you’ve only found withered or even slimy leaves that you could only throw away at that moment. How to prevent this?
You’re asking what’s the best way to store leafy vegetables, so they last as long as possible fresh? Read below how the experiment, which tested three methods of storing green vegetables in the fridge, turned out. You will find out which way won and therefore it is worth using such storage.
An experiment testing three ways of storing vegetables
Withered lettuce leaves are typical, especially when buying leafy vegetables such as Mesclun salad, various mixes of spring salads, or classic lettuce. No one desires to throw away pockets with withered or slimy lettuce leaves that they did not have time to consume at home. This experiment will show you how to avoid it next time.
The experiment used mesclun salad, which tends to wilt very quickly, and a plastic bag. The lettuce leaves were washed and stored in a bag in three ways:
Paper towels and plastic bag
After washing and drying the leaves, the salad was laid out on paper towels, teed, and placed in a plastic bag. However, it was necessary to print as much air as possible before storing it. The bag was subsequently thoroughly closed and stored in the fridge.
Paper towels have been used because they absorb excess moisture from vegetables and protect the leaves from slime. In turn, a sealed pocket keeps excess air circulating in and out, slowing down the wilting process.
Paper towels and plastic bowl
Paper towels were placed on the bottom of the plastic bowl. On top of it are the leaves of lettuce and again one paper towel. The bowl was correctly closed and put in the refrigerator. There was plenty of room in the bowl, so the lettuce leaves weren’t wrinkled.
Paper towels, in this case, served the same purpose as in the first one, but the salad leaves were not so tightly wrapped in them. The bowl also protected the leaves from crumpled other foods in the refrigerator.
Plastic bag and air
The lettuce leaves were put in the pocket. The plastic bag was subsequently inflated with air as much as possible and fastened with a rubber band. This inflated Mesclun salad pocket was placed in the refrigerator.
Air blowing reportedly provides enough carbon dioxide to maintain the freshness of leafy vegetables.
The result of the experiment
Five days later – no difference.
After five days, the salads were pulled out and stacked on a plate in each of the three cases. All the leaves looked great; they weren’t withered or slimy at all. They were returned using the same paper towels and were stored back in the refrigerator.
Seven days later – still fresh
After a week, the process was repeated in the same way. A few bruised leaves were found, but they were neither withered nor slimy. Unbelievable, but they were still fresh. The salads were returned to the original containers and, of course, to the refrigerator.
Ten days later – now the changes are coming.
- The paper towels were damp but not soaked. There were a lot of withered and even slimy leaves. You wouldn’t want to eat this salad.
- In the latter case, only a few wet leaves were found in the bowl, which had to be thrown away. Otherwise, the remaining salad leaves were completely edible; no slimy pieces and paper towels were even slightly moist.
- There were many slimy leaves in the inflated pocket; overall, the salad was only suitable for discarding.

The rugged sides of the bowl protect the salad leaves from damage from other food in the fridge, and paper towels helped absorb excess moisture. This method is, therefore, most suitable for the longer-term storage of leafy vegetables.
