Does Hair Smoothing Harm the Hair

Shiny, silky-smooth hair – that’s what every woman dreams of. But not everyone is naturally blessed with such a smooth mane. If you have frizzy, wavy, or curly hair, you need to know how to help yourself achieve your goal. In this context, most of them resort to smoothing iron. Hair smoothing sounds so easy. But: What happens to the hair? Is it really as harmful as many claims? And do you have to pay attention to something specific when smoothing your hair? Make-up artist and hairstylist Sabine Overbeck knows what hair straightening means for our mane.

Smoothing hair | What happens to the hair?

Smoothing hair

“When smoothing your hair, the horn scales of the hair are pressed together by the heat of the smoothing iron,” says expert Sabine Overbeck, who has been working in the beauty, media, and fashion industry for more than 20 years. The warmth of the smoothing iron, therefore, deforms curly hairs. “When cooled down, the hair is gleaming, caused by the now smooth surface.” However, since the heat of the smoothing iron strains the hair, it is not too often necessary to resort to smoothing iron. Since the so-called sleek look usually lasts for a few days, it is unnecessary to use the smoothing iron every day anyway. But if a few hairs are not as they should, it is recommended to rework only the top part a little to spare the rest of the hair. However, heat protection should always be worked into the hair before smoothing, advises expert Sabine Overbeck.

What can I do to prevent smoothing from being harmful?

Even if heat protection protects against major damage, regular smoothing maneuvers can lead to hair damage. “The important thing is that the hair is really totally dry. It would help if you waited half an hour between blow-drying and smoothing,” says Overbeck. In addition, the individual hair type should be taken into account. “With fine hair, you can work with a smoothing iron that has a step regulation,” she says.

When purchasing a smoothing iron, it is important to pay attention to the quality. “You should use good, high-quality products and not save at the wrong end,” says the hairstylist. In addition, regularly used moisturizer masks help care for the hair in the best possible way and protect it from damage.

Should damaged hair stay frizzy?

It is unnecessary to dispense with hair smoothing with damaged hair completely, but at least caution is required when using the iron. “Striped hair should be treated with a protective hair lotion (or cream) before smoothing in the tips,” says Overbeck. In addition, the smoothing iron should not be hotter than 100 degrees when fine hair is treated.

General tips for hair straightening: How does it work best?

Smoothing hair is easy if you consider a few things:

Washing and drying:

Blow-dry hair sufficiently long after washing and allow it to dry completely. It is best to wait another 30 minutes with the smoothing after the blow-drying. In addition, use a brush containing (partially) natural bristles (e.B. wild boar bristles) when blow-drying. This way, you can prevent the hair from charging and standing off.

Heat protection:

Depending on the product, a heat protection product should be given before blow-drying (in towel-dry hair) or before smoothing (dry hair). These are available, for example, in spray or lotion form.

As already mentioned, the smoothing iron should not save when it comes to a smoothing iron. “It is important to use good smoothing iron. With heat regulation and good heat plates, in brand quality,” says the hair expert.

The cutting:

Now, you should divide the hair into parts and put it up. It is best to start by dividing a part about two centimeters wide at the bottom of the head. The rest of the hair is simply tightly stuck to the top of the head to not interfere with the smoothing. Then you work your way from game to game – from bottom to top.

The technique:

Stretch strands and let the smoothing iron slide over the hair with gentle pressure. Important: “Please always work from the hairline to the hair tips,” says Overbeck. Tip: The finer the strands of hair, the closer you get to the approach. “In addition, always keep the individual strands at right angles, so the smoothed hair falls more fully on the shoulders.”

The speed:

Fast is not the same! Take your time: “Slowly pull through the iron using a guide comb that smoothes the strands properly beforehand,” the specialist recommends.

The final care:

In the end, something nurturing should be added to the tips. “For example, a nourishing styling cream. Or hair wax, that looks cool, and the hair doesn’t fly.” Nourishing hair oils are also recommended.

Do I need to clean my iron?

Cleaning the smoothing iron is essential. All hair tools must be regularly cleared of dust and product residues. Go over the plates with a gentle microfiber cloth and remove residues. If the stains are very stubborn, you can add a little warm water. Important: The cleaning of the smoothing iron must only be done in a cold state, i.e., switched off, if it is not connected to the current.
