The state of water, which a person uses in everyday life and for drinking, is one determining factor of high quality of life. Water usually gets into the faucet to the end-user in two ways:
- from a centralized urban water supply system for urban dwellers;
- from underground sources (wells) for residents of the suburbs.
Water from the water supply can have a yellowish tint, a specific smell, and an increased content of stiff salts, less often iron, aluminum, nitrates. Some impurities can affect the quality of water use in everyday life, and some negatively affect the organoleptic and toxicological qualities of water. Well, water often has increased stiffness, and iron content can also have the smell of rotten eggs (hydrogen sulfide). Almost any water in Ukraine requires a certain cleaning to bring it to a suitable state. Below, we’ll categorize the filters and tell you what impurities they can remove.
What are the drinking water filters?
- Pitcher filters
- Triple water filters
- Reverse osmosis filters
- Water mineralization
- Decontamination of water with UV lamps
Household water filters
1. Mechanical filters
- Carbon filters for water
- Disc water filters
- Filling filters for mechanical water purification
2. Water softening
- Softening water
- Water hardness
- Water softeners filters
- Rereagent water filters
- Reagent method of softening water
3. Adsorbation water treatment
Why is water dangerous without cleaning?
Each water source is characterized by a certain set of contaminants, which are the determining factors.
Below, we will give typical pollution, typical of different types of water.
And these are only basic contaminants, except they can contain many different pollutants in the water depending on the region where you live. The composition of the water can vary even within one settlement. If water is taken from the centralized water supply system, the main causes of pollution are:
- outdated water treatment equipment that fails to meet its targets; chlorine odor due to excessive chlorination;
- The general condition of water intake sources and, as a result, the content of abnormal quantities of pollutants (usually water gets into your tap from one of the reservoirs of your village);
- color and smell of water as a result of the imperfection and old age of the pipelines.
If we talk about alternative sources of water, for example, wells, then there are such problems:
- red and/or gray plaque on plumbing, metallic taste of water due to the high content of iron and manganese;
- the smell of rotten eggs – because of the high content of hydrogen sulfide;
- sticky plaque on surfaces that come into contact with water and high watercolor – the content of suspended particles and bacteria.
And these are only phenomena that a person can feel with their senses. In fact, there are still such common pollutants as heavy metal ions, nitrates, pesticides, phenols, and other dangerous substances.
Therefore, before choosing a filter for water purification should consult with a specialist or even give water for analysis.
What to buy a water filter?
Today, the market offers a wide range of equipment – you can choose water filters for a private house or apartment that will provide safe water to you and your loved ones and meet your financial capabilities.
We tried to depict a brief classification of household water filters schematically. With this small map, you can figure out how to organize clean water in the house.
If you are wondering how to choose a water filter yourself and consult a specialist, or you want to understand what guides professionals in this matter, below we have prepared a more detailed material with an overview of filters to solve the most pressing problems in your home.
Drinking water filters
- Reverse osmosis filters.
- Pitcher filters.
- Triple filters.
Filter jug Is the simplest water treatment device. It is a plastic jug. Inside it is installed filter cartridge, through which water passes in the process of filtering. The cartridge is filled with a mixture of different cleaning components, usually activated embers and ion exchange resins that will save you from such problems:
- squimp on the kettle (removes stiff salt ions);
- Bad odor (removes chlorine and its carcinogenic compounds);
- Watercolor (removes organic impurities);
- The metallic taste of water (removes iron);
- muddy water (removes mechanical impurities);
- Jug filters can also reduce heavy metals and toxic organic compounds.
Maintenance of such a filter involves replacing the cartridge once a month, but the replacement frequency can vary based on the quantity and quality of the water missed. Before you buy a jug water filter, you should carefully read the user’s manual or consult with the seller-consultant.
Triple water filters
A triple water filter represents three plastic flasks with interchangeable cartridges fixed on a sturdy plastic frame. The filter connects to the cold water pipe and is installed under the sink. Anesthetic chrome faucet for purified water is carried to the surface of the sink.
Inside these filters is a set of three cartridges to remove different types of dirt. These filters provide for three stages of purification, usually:
- mechanical filtering, during which sand, rust, squimp, and other impurities measuring more than 5 microns are removed;
- softening of water and removal of iron and manganese ions on ion-exchange cartridges;
- sorbation from chlorine water and its chlorine, organic toxic, and bad-smelling compounds.
A triple filter will be a great choice for cleaning tap water in your home.
The filter service is to replace the cartridge elements and wash the flasks once a quarter. This filter can be installed both independently and with the help of a qualified specialist.
Reverse osmosis filters
A reverse osmosis filter for water is the most up-to-date solution for preparing useful and safe drinking water for your family.
The reverse osmosis membrane removes 99.8% of the contaminants, including even the smallest particles of viruses. None of the existing water filters can do the job better.
Usually, the water filter includes pre-cleaning as a set of three pre-cleaning cartridge filters that make the membrane work:
- A foamed polypropylene cartridge with a 5-micron filtration rating to remove mechanical impurities (sand, rust, silt, etc.);
- a cartridge made of granular activated charcoal to remove chlorine, chlorogenic, and organic water impurities;
- carbon block to remove chlorine residues and mechanical impurities.
The main element of the reverse-static water filter is the membrane, which provides a fine purification of water from all possible contaminants, including the entire range of chemicals and the slightest particles of viruses.
Water after reverse osmosis does not require sterilization and can be consumed without boiling even the smallest members of your family.
The maintenance of reverse osmosis filters replaces pre-cleaning cartridges once a quarter and the membrane element once a year. To have a constant supply of drinking water, an additional element of water filters’ design is a storage capacity.
It is recommended that the filter is maintained by qualified staff.
After membrane treatment, water can already be supplied to the final consumer. Still, since purification is complete desalination of water, it is recommended to add additional minerals, namely calcium and magnesium.
For this purpose, special filters-mineralizers have been invented, which enrich the water with vital quantities of ions of these macronutrients. You can clearly appreciate the work of water mineralizers in this video.
Decontamination of water with UV lamps
It is mentioned above that the water that has passed the membrane cleaning is free of 99.98% of impurities, including viruses and bacteria. But as long as the water is in the storage tank, it can develop microorganisms that got there during installation or other unforeseen circumstances.
In this case, there are perfectly safe, eco-friendly ultraviolet water decontaminates.
The principle of such devices is based on the fact that the rays of the UV spectrum damage pathogens, affecting their DNA, thus losing their ability to reproduce.
It is especially worth paying attention to the UV sterilizers of water to small children in the house, as their safety is above all. If you choose the right water purifier for the house, you can get clean and safe water and the whole family’s health.
Household water filters
Below we will describe the best ways to clean water in everyday life in the house and the apartment. These include:
- Mechanical filters (pepper, cartridge, disk).
- Water softening filters.
- Iron removal filters.
- Coal filters (removing chlorine, organic matter, and hydrogen sulfide).
Mechanical impurities of water are sand, soil, clay, silt, rust (oxidized iron), and other insoluble elements. These particles are in a suspended state and, when using such water in everyday life, significantly reduce the life of household appliances and plumbing and installed systems of drinking water purification.
The mechanical filter removes large particles of mechanical impurities from the water. With these filters:
- Increases the resource of subsequent filtration steps;
- Plumbing and piping elements last longer;
- precipitation disappears in the bathroom and sink.
Water pollution by mechanical impurities is more typical of groundwater (well and well) and, to a lesser extent, tap water.
The type of filter depends on the number of insoluble impurities, the average daily and peak water consumption, and the area set aside for the installation of filtration equipment.
Carbon filters for water
The cartridge filter is perhaps the simplest and most common type of mechanical water filter.
Its main components are a flask (hull) filter and a replacement cartridge. The filter is mounted in a cold water pipe at the entrance to the house or directly at the water usage point.
In the filtration process, water is fed onto the cartridge, which removes the contamination. The degree of cleaning is characterized by the size of the particles held and is called the filtering rating.
For example, a filter with a filter rating of 5 microns removes all particles of mechanical impurities measuring 5 or more microns; smaller particles will pass through the filter material. The most common filter characteristics of cartridge mechanical filters are 100, 50, 20, 10, 5, and 1 micrometer.
Filter flasks are made from high-quality, high-pressure, and sometimes heat-resistant plastics. The material of the mechanical cartridge is usually a foamed polypropylene or a tightly winded polypropylene thread.
Installing and maintaining the cartridge filter is extremely simple, so that you can do it yourself.
Disc water filters
Disc filters are an excellent solution for the cleaning of natural water for household use. These filters are easy to maintain and provide a high level of water mixture.
One of the main advantages of disk filters is their eco-friendliness – they do not use interchangeable parts that require recycling or recycling.
Constructively, the disk filter is a case with a package of discs with grooves of different sizes inside. Between each next pair of disks, working cavities of different configurations and sizes are formed, through which water passes during the filtration process. During the water movement, interdisces cavities hold pollution particles, and clean water enters the water treatment system. Filter discs are made of high-strength and durable polyamide.
When the filter disk package is gradually clogged, and the cleaning efficiency decreases, manual or automatic flushing is performed. The flushing is reversed by the flow of water at open discs.
The principle of working and flushing the disk filter for water can be understood in detail from the video:
Filling filters for mechanical water purification
These filters are usually installed in the water treatment systems for the cottage, the source of the water supply of which is very muddy water from the wells.
The filter is a polymer corrosion-resistant body in a column with an automatic water supply valve. The column is filled with filtering material. The main properties of filtering materials are:
- high mechanical resistance to washing, because if the download is severely erased, the reduction in download porosity will lead to a sharp decrease in performance;
- chemical inertia to avoid water pollution with additional impurities.
Therefore, the loading of water filters is usually quartz sand, anthracite, and other materials that have these properties.
In the process of filtering, the water is fed to a small load, particles of which delay impurities. When the filter resource is close to completion, there is automatic flushing and flushing of the load by the reverse current of water. Due to modern automation, these processes do not require human intervention and even independently adjust to the time of minimal water consumption.
The choice of a mechanical filter for water purification depends on the goals pursued and the filter’s performance.
The main drawbacks of hard water are:
- Skin and hair discomfort – hard water causes dryness and irritation.
- Scale – reduces efficiency and can lead to the breakdown of the kettle, washing and dishwasher, boiler, and electric boiler. In heating systems, scum deposits inside radiators reduce their heat output and, accordingly, lead to energy overruns.
- High detergent consumption. In hard water, soap and washing powder are less dissolved, resulting in the overspending of detergents during washing. Water consumption for rinsing also increases.
The concept of water stiffness is usually associated with calcium alkaline kali-earth metal cations (Sa2+) and magnesium (Mg2+). These are the main cations. Salt-forming stiffness, other two-charge cations also affect the rigidity of the water, but their contribution is so small that they can be neglected. Cations of bivalent metals interact with anions with the formation of compounds that can fall into the sediment. Single-valent cations (e.g., Na sodium) do not form insoluble salts in water, so they do not affect water rigidity. +
The table below shows the main components of water stiffness. Cations are positively charged particles (usually metal particles), and anions are negatively charged, usually complex non-metallic compounds.
Calcium (Ca2+) Hydrocarbonate (HCO)3-)
Magnesium (Mg2+) Sulfate (SO 42-)
Iron (Fe2+) Chloride (Cl-)
Manganese (Mn2+) Silikat (SiO32-)
In practice, iron and manganese have such a small impact on rigidity that they are usually neglected. Aluminum (Al3+) and trivalent iron (Fe3+) also affect rigidity, but at pH levels found in natural waters, their solubility and, accordingly, “contribution” to rigidity are negligible.
The following varieties of water hard are distinguished.
Determined by the total concentration of calcium and magnesium ions. It is a sum of carbonate (temporary) and non-carbon (constant) rigidity.
It is determined by the presence of hydrocarbons and calcium and magnesium carbonates in the water. This type of rigidity is almost eliminated when boiling water and is therefore called temporary rigidity. When the water is heated, the hydrocarbons break down with the formation of carbon dioxide and the fallout of calcium carbonate and magnesium hydroxide (a plaque on the kettle and heating appliances).
Non-carbon rigidity. Due to the presence of calcium and magnesium salts of strong acids (sulfur, nitrogen, salt) and boiling is not eliminated (constant rigidity).
Water softeners filters
Two types of reagent-free and reagent-free filters are used to reduce rigidity.
Rereagent water filters
The principle of mitigating the effect of reagent filters is based on the unique properties of ion exchange resins.
There are cartridges and filling filters. Pepper filters are trendy because of the high performance, ease of service, and wide range on the market.
Filling filters for softening water are ion exchange resins. They are high-molecular synthetic compounds with a three-dimensional macroporous structure and contain functional groups capable of ion-exchange reactions. During the softening process, Cationite extracts stiff ions from the water and, in return, gives away safe sodium ions. To restore the resource of ion exchange resin, its regeneration is taking place – rinsing with a solution of tableted food salt (sodium chloride).
Some special ion exchange resins or their mixtures can remove rigidity ions and have a high selectivity to iron ions. Filters with such fillings are called filters-decontamination.
Modern pepper filters, softeners, and dehydrators have three structural modifications.

How does the filter work?
The filter is installed at the entrance of cold water to the dwelling. Water, pre-cleaned from mechanical impurities, enters the filter body, filled with cationic, and, passing through a layer of resin, is cleared of stiff salts. The purified water through the central tube of the hull is fed to the consumer or at the subsequent stages of cleaning.
After exhausting the resin resource, when it can no longer absorb the rigidity ions, the control valve puts the filter into regeneration mode. For the consumer’s convenience, the valve settings are programmed so that the filter is regenerated during minimal water consumption.
When installing softeners and relievers filters, you should always consult a specialist and analyze the water to correctly calculate the required volume of the filter material and, accordingly, the size of the filter case.
Reagent method of softening water
The reagent method of softening water means adding specific safe chemicals into the water, which form compounds with salts of rigidity that cannot fall into the sediment and thus prevent the deposition of scum.
This method of softening can only be used for technical water (washing machine, boiler, heating system) because substances that are part of mitigating mixtures are harmful to humans when eaten.
Usually, the reagent softening of water in everyday conditions occurs on special filters filled with salts of softening components. When water passes through such a filter, the crystals partially dissolve and saturate the water with the necessary softening additives.
Such filters are enough for 15 – 20 m 3 300-400 washing machine cycles.
The main drawback of most of these devices is that their main component is polyphosphates. These substances can cause allergies, skin irritation in humans and negatively affect the work of centralized biological treatment plants. For this reason, in many countries of the world, the use of phosphates in everyday life (powders, water softeners) is prohibited.
But not everything is as sad as it seems at first glance. There are eco-friendly and safe phosphate water softeners.
Adsorption water treatment
Adsorb filters are designed to be removed from the water:
- chlorine and chlorogenic compounds (in addition to the decontaminating properties of chlorine have several drawbacks, the main ones is a sharp odor even at small residual concentrations in water, as well as the formation of carcinogenic chlorogenic compounds);
- hydrogen sulfide and other sulfur compounds (they are the cause of the unpleasant smell of “rotten eggs,” which makes water unsuitable for household use);
- organic compounds of natural (fulvodislots) and artificial nature (pesticides, phenols, etc.) that can be toxic, as well as causing unpleasant swamp smells and water tastes.
Adsorption is a spontaneous process of increasing the concentration of dissolved matter near the surface of the two phases’ surface due to the uncompensation of intermolecular interaction forces. In simple terms, in the context of water purification, it concentrates certain pollutants on the surface of the pores of special substances – sorbents.
Water treatment technologies have long used combustion products of natural raw materials, such as wood, seeds of different fruits, etc.
Today activated (treated specially) charcoal is the most common and sufficiently effective sorbent to purify water from chlorine, poorly plowed, and toxic high-molecular substances of natural and industrial origin.
The main characteristic of activated coals is the surface area, the inner area of all available adsorbent pores, which pollution particles can occupy.
Also, thanks to the high active surface, coals can act as a carrier of catalysts (accelerators) of oxidation of water impurities such as hydrogen sulfide.
Several filters are based on activated charcoal, namely filled filters, cartridge filters made of granular or compressed material. Also, sometimes in production, additional impurities are introduced into the material, making coal resistant to biological growths, such as silver particles.
Installation of absorbing water filters requires a specialist and water analysis advice to determine the required degree of purification, the mass of the filter material, the stages of pre-cleaning, etc.

Disadvantages It covers a large area of Non-recoverable cartridges, an increased number of cartridges, a conditionally limited resource.
So, the questions you need to answer before choosing the right water filter in your home?
- Where is the water supply (from the well or water supply)?
- What kind of water do you want to clean (drinking, technical, water for the heating system and boiler, full cycle)?
- What problems do you see with the naked eye (color, smell, sediment)?
- What area can be allocated for the installation of water treatment equipment?
And after such a brief analysis of the situation, you can decide which water filter to choose and understand what issues a detailed consultation is needed.
