The first thing to pay attention to when buying air conditioning – its power. It is calculated depending on the area of the room in which the climate technology will be installed. To choose from the beginning, it is enough to remember a simple formula:
Each 1 sq m of space should account for 100 w of the useful air conditioning capacity. But only on the condition that there are no additional sources of heat in it, and the number of people present does not exceed 1-2.
Each person produces 100 Wheat in a calm state. If there are several people in the room constantly, it is necessary to calculate the unit’s performance, taking into account their number. A more powerful air conditioning will also be needed when the room’s windows overlook the sunny side.
When buying, consider the noise level. The sound pressure rate for SanPin is 24 dB, so if the chosen model has a higher rate, it will be uncomfortable to be in the room. Additional functions influence the cost and efficiency of climate technology.
Useful options include:
- Moisturization or drying of air;
- Flow distribution system;
- Clean up with multi-stage filters;
- Sensors of movement or presence of people.
Other nuances of buying a good air conditioner you will learn from the article“How to choose air conditioning.” For the time being, we will move on to the review of the best, reliable and functional models presented on the market.

In the following chapter, we will show you which aspects and key data you can use to decide between the multitude of possible split air conditioners.
The criteria to be observed and comparable for Split air conditioning systems are:
- Cooling capacity BTU
- Energy efficiency class
- noise level
- Room size max.
- electricity consumption
In the upcoming paragraphs, we will introduce you to the relevance of the individual points.
Cooling capacity BTU
One of the most important criteria is cooling performance. The cooling capacity indicates how much cooling is possible per hour.
The cooling performance is also reflected in the power consumption and the maximum room size for the split air conditioning system.
The unit where the cooling capacity is measured is called the “British Thermal Unit” and indicates the air conditioning system’s maximum performance per hour.
Energy efficiency class
No one wants to allow a power-eater with a device that runs for several hours a day. The energy efficiency class indicates at a glance how much a split air conditioning system consumes.
The EU standardised system is divided into different classes – the best A++ to the worst D. For clarity, a Class A+ device is 20% more energy efficient than a level A device, and a device in A++ is as much as 40%.
A loud split air conditioning system may bring the room to the desired temperature, but it does not create a pleasant atmosphere.
The measure of volume measurement is the decibel. Up to 50 dB, the noise is pleasant for the human eye; from 100 dB, one speaks of painful noise.
Split air conditioners are between 25dB and 50dB for the indoor unit, depending on the load. The outdoor unit is usually beyond 50dB.
Room size max.
The maximum room size that can be air-conditioned with a split air conditioning system depends on the watts’ number. If the air conditioner has more watts or BTU, you can air-conditioning more volume.
Electricity consumption is calculated in kWh, i.e. kilowatts per hour. Inverter Split air conditioners are very economical in contrast to comparable devices.
On average, such a system should consume 150 to 400kWh per year, depending on the use and equipment.
A split air conditioning system does much more than just regulate temperatures. Dehumidification and ventilation contribute to a pleasant indoor climate as well as the actual temperature.
Make sure that your split air conditioner also has exactly the functions. Besides, other functions, such as integrating the system into your smart home system or Wifi, can be of interest to you.
What is the cooling capacity required?
Before you buy air conditioning, you should consider what cooling capacity you would need. Occasionally, one finds flat-rate information, such as 30 to 40 watts per cubic meter of room volume. With a living area of 50 m2, this would be about 4 kW of cooling capacity. However, many aspects need to be taken into account.
In general, the idea is to estimate what heating capacity heats the room air. In summer, the heating of your apartment is mainly done by sunlight: in a straight incidence, the sun radiates about 1 kW per m2 of window area—the greater the angle between the sun and the windowpane, the lower the value. Windows on the north side of the house can be neglected while sloping skylights capture a lot of heat.
The heating capacity by heat conduction from outside to inside, on the other hand, is often negligible in new buildings. Still, in the absence of thermal insulation, up to 1 kW’s heat input can also be generated. Besides, there are also smaller contributions due to the body heat of 0.1 kW per person and the power consumption of electrical devices, which is almost completely converted into heat.
Maintenance of air conditioning systems
Most air conditioners have one or more simple air filters to trap dust and pollen. These filters can clog over a long operating period and must then be cleaned. In addition to easy cleaning of the air-flowing components, the component’s disinfection is also part of the regular maintenance work. Otherwise, there is a risk that moulds and bacteria will settle in the device and be distributed with the outflowing air in your home.
For small compact devices, you can often carry out the simple cleaning and disinfection work yourself. For larger plants, you should let experts come; in the case of commercial use or large private air conditioning systems with more than 3 kg of refrigerant, you are even obliged to do so. Professional maintenance of an air conditioner also includes the leak test of the refrigerant lines; a detailed list can be found in the VDMA 24186-3 policy.
However, be careful to replace refrigerant yourself or repair the pipes: the chemicals used can cause serious damage to health if mishandled. Their disposal must not be carried out via the house drain for environmental reasons.
Airing and sun protection: alternatives to air conditioning
Before you decide to purchase a larger air conditioner, you should try to keep your apartment cool without technical aids. The top rule is to avoid letting heat into the house. Because direct sunlight has the greatest heating effect, you need to shade your windows. Ideal are outdoor blinds that block the sunlight before it passes your window. Interior blinds work less well, as only a part of the reflected light enters the outside through the window pane. Be sure to install your sunscreen in the morning before the intense sunlight falls through the window and not during the day when your apartment is already heated up.
Especially in houses with thick walls, which heat up only slowly, you should also ventilate the morning, evening and at night in summer. During the day, on the other hand, you would let a lot of heat into the building with the fresh air; the windows should remain closed.
Savings tips for air conditioners
The power consumption of air conditioners should not be underestimated. The desired cooling capacity is usually a few kilowatts, and the demand for electrical energy is of the same order of magnitude due to unavoidable conversion losses. Do not overburden your air conditioning at hot outdoor temperatures: a temperature difference of about 6 °C between indoors and outdoors should not be exceeded. At outdoor temperatures of 30 °C, a room temperature of 24 °C would therefore already be ideal. A small temperature difference saves your wallet and your circulation: all people do not tolerate the change from warm to cold.
The larger the compressor and the fans fail, the higher the air conditioning system’s efficiency, i.e., the less electrical power is required for the same cooling power. Therefore, when purchasing an air conditioner, choose the widest possible model, which you would prefer to operate at a lower level.
Good air conditioners work with a power-controlled compressor that can adjust the cooling performance to current requirements. On the other hand, older models use compressors in cycle mode, which are only automatically switched on and off. However, because compressors’ energy efficiency is higher at partial load than at full load, you can save power by leaving the compressor on all the time, but only when cooling performance is reduced.
Although there are classifications of the appliances in energy efficiency classes A, A+, etc., as are also found in refrigerators and other electrical household appliances, however, because the overall efficiency of the air conditioners depends more on the type than on the respective compressor, these efficiency labels are only suitable for comparison within one device type.

Technology and function of air conditioning systems
The outside temperatures change not only in the season but also between day and night from icy-cold to sunny-hot. To reach pleasant room temperatures of about 20 °C even in winter, all houses are equipped with heating as standard. But in summer, the temperatures outside regularly exceed the area where you feel comfortable, and even in your apartment, the warmth becomes unpleasant.
Air conditioners offer a practical solution to be prepared even in heatwaves and to keep a cool head. These cool the room air and thus create a healthy indoor climate even in summer. In the meantime, there are also a variety of air conditioners that you can use in your home.
A healthy indoor climate for your home
Setting an ideal room temperature is desirable for health reasons. Because our body constantly draws energy from the burning of food, it also depends on the continuous release of heat to the environment. However, if the ambient temperature is too high, your body will no longer be able to cool down due to sweat’s evaporation and circulatory problems.
If the room temperature is too high, your performance is reduced: above 28 °C, it is only about 70% of the maximum value that you can reach about 20 °C room temperature. In fact, the technical rules for workplaces in Germany also state that a maximum temperature of 26 °C may not be exceeded for workspaces without appropriate protective measures. [1,2]
What types of air conditioners are there?
To cool the air in your apartment, there are various technical solutions. The most commonly used air conditioners work with a refrigerant that flows in a circuit between a compressor and the air conditioning system’s cooling fins. In the compressor, the refrigerant is compacted and liquefied before it flows through the cooling fins. It can expand and evaporate again; it absorbs heat from the environment, which is cooled in this way. The gaseous refrigerant then flows back to the compressor, where the cooling circuit closes.
Such a refrigeration machine is used in air conditioning systems and used in refrigerators in a comparable design. At the heart of this coolant, the circuit is the compressor. Here, electrical energy is used to liquefy the refrigerant and give it the potential to cool the room later by evaporative cold. However, the compressor inevitably produces waste heat, which must be directed outside. The worse the compressor’s energy efficiency, the greater the power consumption and the more hot air must be removed.
The compressor’s heat dissipation to the environment stands in the way of the goal to cool your home. For a good cooling effect, the warm air must be transported outside, but the air conditioner’s cooling fins are inside the room. There are essentially three different concepts for how the air conditioning system manages this separation of cooling and warming components.
Mobile air conditioning cool without wall break-through
The simplest models are mobile air conditioners, which are also called monoblock air conditioning systems due to their design. They consist of only one housing, which includes both the compressor and the cooling fins. However, because the compressor’s waste heat would compensate for any evaporative cold on the cooling fins, the compressor’s warm exhaust air must be routed outside with a hose through the half-opened window.
Mobile air conditioning
The enormous advantage of mobile air conditioners is that you do not need a specialist to install the system, and you do not have to make any structural changes to your home. These mobile devices can also be moved from one room to another.
The disadvantage of monoblock air conditioners is their low efficiency. Due to the compact design, the compressor and fan are usually chosen quite small, so that their efficiency is low. Also, the compressor’s direct proximity to the cooling fins causes a heat flow inside the device, which reduces the cooling effect. If you lead the exhaust hose outside through an open window, try to keep the open gap as small as possible or even glue it off. Otherwise, warm fresh air from the outside can quickly enter the apartment’s interior and raise the temperature.
Efficient air conditioning systems with split devices
To increase the air conditioning system’s energy efficiency, it makes sense to separate the compressor and cooling fins spatially. Ideally, the compressor is completely outside the rooms to be cooled, i.e. outside your home. The heat generated by the liquefaction of the refrigerant can thus be released directly outdoors. Only the liquid refrigerant is transported indoors via hoses, where there is a second housing, in which only the cooling fins are located.
Split devices have two units – one inside and one outside
Splitting the air conditioning system into two parts improves efficiency and cooling performance and reduces noise pollution. Most of the noise production is caused by the compressor, which is outside with split devices, so it stays quiet in your home.
However, the installation of a split air conditioning system involves a greater effort. After all, the refrigerant lines have to be laid from inside to outside so that a wall breakthrough is usually required. If you live in a rental apartment, you must obtain permission from your landlord for both the wall break and the compressor’s application outside the facade.
Air-conditioning window units for easy installation
A hybrid solution of monoblock air conditioning systems and split devices is window devices made up of housing but installed in the window opening. One half of the device is located on the inside of the room, the other half outside. As a rule, the installation of window units is easier to do than split air conditioning systems because, with the window opening, no complete wall breakthrough is necessary anymore.
Air conditioning directly in the window
What are the differences between air coolers and air conditioners?
Occasionally, air coolers are also offered under a wide variety of air conditioning systems. These also have the purpose of lowering the room temperature, but they are not based on the circulation of a refrigerant but also on the water’s evaporative cooling. A tank in the unit is pre-filled with water, which the warm room air is blown past with a fan. The water evaporates slowly and absorbs heat from the passing air. The exhaust air emitted is thus cooled.
Because air coolers do not require large compressors, they are very compact and lightweight to be used mobile in different locations. Besides, the power consumption is significantly lower due to the compressor’s elimination, as only a simple fan is required. However, the cooling capacity is much lower than for air conditioners with compressors, and cold water must be refilled regularly for operation.
A major drawback of water-based air coolers is that they not only cool the room but at the same time moisten the room air. Due to the evaporation of the liquid, the amount of water in the air increases. Simultaneously, however, the temperature drops, which reduces the air’s ability to absorb water. Both effects intensify, and the relative humidity rises quickly to high values. The increased humidity can be perceived as unpleasant by humans. However, because it promotes mould formation, the moist air can be harmful to your health and walls and furniture.
What do you need a split air conditioner for?
A split air conditioning system makes it possible to create an optimal and healthy room atmosphere in all rooms. The holistic system works independently of external influences.
A split air conditioner internalizes different functions:
- regulate the air temperature
- adjust the humidity
- change the airspeed
- filter and replace the air
Each room that contains a built-in indoor unit can be individually air-conditioned. Different activities have different requirements for high performance.
A bedroom should ideally have a room temperature of 17 to 20 C°, and a study has different requirements with 20 to 22 C°.
How is a split air conditioner mounted?
The split air conditioning system’s installation can be carried out by a specialist company or by oneself. First of all, it should be said that the assembly involves a lot of effort, technology and know-how. We, therefore, advise against self-assembly as an inexperienced hobby craftsman. The system consists of two parts, the indoor unit and the outdoor unit. One starts with the installation of the interior unit in the desired room on the wall. For this purpose, the connection between the two devices is established using a drilling rung.
The outdoor unit is mounted on the facade or in a suitable place on the floor. The refrigerant pipe, condensate hose, and the two devices’ electrical connection are laid through the wall breakthrough.
The cables and hoses are connected to the indoor and outdoor unit, and the outdoor unit also receives a further power supply. The assembly is completed here.
The refrigerant line’s connection must be carried out by a certified cooling technician and must not be carried out under any circumstances!
Before the system is put into operation, the pipe is treated with a vacuum pump to remove moisture and air from the circuit. The valves can be opened, and the system tested.
Are there mobile split air conditioners?
Yes, there are mobile split air conditioners. In principle, these devices work the same way. The noisy outdoor unit is placed outside the desired room and connected to the indoor unit using a hose or window.
Therefore, the mobile split air conditioning system can be installed and dismantled relatively easily and can be used flexibly, for example, in a camper or caravan. However, flexibility and Compton has a loss of performance compared to fixed-installed systems.
How much does a split air conditioning cost?
The cost of split air conditioning depends on several factors:
Central Split Air Conditioning When planning buildings, take into account over 2000€ different
Decentralized Split air conditioning From a professional up to 2000€ 600-2000€ up to 200€
Mobile Split Air Conditioning No costs up to 1800€ 150-250€
Self-assembly saves a lot of money; a professional assembly can cost up to 2000€. The acquisition costs amount to approx. 600-2000€ – depending on the brand and number of interior appliances. The operating costs per year are between 85€ and 250€, depending on the running time and electricity consumption.
A mobile device saves installation, of course, but is on average more expensive in operating costs. Acquisition costs also range from 600-2000€ and more.
Where can I buy a split air conditioner?
Split air conditioning systems can be purchased in all specialist and DIY stores. Some companies offer both the purchase of split air conditioning and the assembly. There are also a variety of shops online:
What is special about a split air conditioning system?
The efficient division of the technology into an indoor and an outdoor unit results in many advantages. A split air conditioner works very efficiently than other devices – low power consumption and high cooling performance.

Split air conditioners are ideal for all rooms due to their design. The noisy outdoor unit does not affect the well-being of the room.
What are the alternatives to Split air conditioners?
A comparable cooling capacity can only be obtained with monoblock devices. These air conditioners operate according to the same principle but are not divided into two units but are located in a case in the room to be cooled. This creates an unpleasant volume!
Mobile column air conditioning system A small column placed in the desired room pumps out the heat with an exhaust air hose.
Monoblock air conditioning Is available with or without an exhaust air hose. The device is mounted in the room and can achieve similar values to a split air conditioning system is installed correctly.
Fans/ventilation system Get the air cycle going and give a cooling feeling. The room temperature is not reduced.
Dehumidifier Regulates the humidity to a pleasant indoor climate but does not air-condition the room.
Other alternatives do not affect a split air conditioning system – fans that move the air cycle do not cool any room.
Mobile air conditioners without exhaust air hose cool scare the warm air in the room – a split air conditioning system remove the heat from the air and have much more cooling capacity.
How does a split air conditioner work?
- The functionality is a physical circuit and is based on the fact that warm air always flows to cold air. The circuit is carried out until the desired room temperature is reached. The indoor unit sucks in the air in the room.
- The refrigerant in the evaporator becomes gaseous due to the heat.
- The compressor further increases the temperature that gaseous refrigerant is forwarded to the outdoor unit.
- The gaseous refrigerant is released into the ambient air and liquefies again.
- A valve reduces the pressure of the liquid.
- The air is then fed to the interior.
During heating, the circuit is also only reversed; heat is extracted from the outside air and fed into the room.
The flowing circuit generates an airflow, for which the air is dehumidified during the cooling process and thus contributes to general well-being.
What split air conditioning do I need?
- The performance of your Split air conditioning system depends on different environmental factors: Space
- ceiling height
- heat-generating sources
- electrical equipment
As the first rough formula for calculating the required watts: cubic meters of space x 40 watts, to do this, the heater sources must now be added – per person; you add 100 watts on the bill – for electrical appliances, you can take a fixed value of 500 watts.
Decision: What types of split air conditioners are there, and which one is right for you?
Split air conditioners hardly differ from each other technically. On the other hand, the installation is a big difference depending on the planning and purchase time. The individual plants can be technically divided into:
- inverse Split air conditioners
- On/Off Split Air Conditioners
The installation of the Split air conditioners is different and can be divided into:
- central split air conditioning
- decentralized split air conditioning
- mobile split air conditioning
What distinguishes inverted Split air conditioning systems, and what are the advantages and disadvantages?
The invert technology is a special way for intelligent air conditioning of premises. Such a device is not permanently busy and reaches the desired room temperature with less per cent and keeps it.
- Less power consumption
- Uniform temperatures
- Lower volume
- Less wear
- High acquisition costs
- Long-term maintenance
- Elaborate assembly
The inverted technology works with less utilization on a continual indoor climate. Wear and volume are between 30-70% lower than on/off devices due to the load.
The high-tech devices have high acquisition costs and require regular maintenance for long service life. As with all split air conditioning systems, the installation is very complex.
What distinguishes On/Off Split air conditioning, and what are the advantages and disadvantages?
The on/off system switches on with sensors’ help as soon as the room has exceeded the desired temperature. When the previously set temperature is reached, the device switches off again.
- Don’t run permanently
- Volume only when the device is in operation
- Excellent cooling results
- Temperature difference greater
- Utilization always at 100%
- No power adjustment possible
- Elaborate assembly
The non-permanent running On/Off Split air conditioning system achieves excellent results when installed properly. Compared to invert devices, the temperature differences are greater – inverse devices keep a certain temperature permanently, on/off devices always turn on when fluctuations occur.
The continuous utilization at 100% results in high wear and does not work as energy-efficiently as inverter technology.
What distinguishes central split air conditioning systems, and what are the advantages and disadvantages?
Central Split air conditioners are suitable for air conditioning entire buildings. With air shafts and channels, an optimal indoor climate can be achieved without additional visible indoor devices.
- Indoor devices are not visible
- Energy efficient
- hardly any noise
- Holistic building solution
- Subsequently, the installation is associated with a high effort
- High maintenance
- High acquisition costs
With a central split air conditioning system, the interior units are installed directly into the ceiling and are therefore not visible. The air cycle and temperature is regulated with air ducts.
A central device is usually considered in building planning, as subsequent installation involves high costs and costs.
What distinguishes decentralized Split air conditioning systems, and what are the advantages and disadvantages?
Decentralized Split air conditioning systems can be retrofitted into buildings. The installation is less complex than with central air conditioning systems. Several indoor appliances must also be available to air-conditioning several rooms – these are called Multi-split air conditioning systems.
- Subsequent installation possible
- Cheaper than a central solution
- Targeted rooms can be air-conditioned
- Installation can be carried out mostly by yourself
- several indoor appliances are required for several rooms
- Not as efficient as a central system
- Indoor devices are visibly mounted
What distinguishes mobile split air conditioning systems, and what are the advantages and disadvantages?
Mobile Split air conditioners do not break through and can be used with little effort in different rooms, caravans or campers.
- Mobile usable
- easy/no assembly
- No permanent breakthroughs needed
- Not so efficient
- Air cycle passively degraded by open windows
- High purchase price
Decentralized devices are often no more expensive to purchase than mobile split air conditioning systems, but the mobile solution saves installation costs.
Facts worth knowing about split air conditioning systems
How is a split air conditioner cleaned?
To maintain the full cooling function and avoid bacteria, the device must be cleaned regularly.
The first component that is cleaned regularly is the air filter. Easily remove and wash the air filter as soon as the filter is dry and start the air conditioning again.
The second component that you clean yourself is the capacitor. For this purpose, there are different cleaning sprays, which spray and where the capacitor is located in the system, you can find from the operating instructions.
How does the split air conditioning maintenance work?
In private use, it is recommended to have the device regularly serviced. This ensures that all functions are fully functional and that there is no damage to the device. You are not obliged to do so!
